ENCORE! development is new site of Tampa’s holiday donation tent

TAMPA — ENCORE!®, the Tampa Housing Authority development honoring the city’s once-vibrant black entertainment district along Central Avenue, is providing space for the charity to collect and distribute holiday meals and gifts to low-income families in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Polk counties.

The tent, which opened for donations Thursday (Nov. 3) and will remain up through December nearly spans the length of a football field. An estimated 10,000 volunteers will serve some 18,000 families. The most-needed items include frozen turkeys and hams, cereal, stuffing, gift cards and presents intended for teenagers and infants.

At its grand reveal, renovated Perry Harvey Sr. Park touted as ‘a living, breathing history lesson’

TAMPA — Not 30 minutes before he arrived at the grand debut of the renovated Perry Harvey Sr. Park on Sunday afternoon, Tampa native Tony Crawford listened to his 67-year-old mother reminisce about the lively black community that once thrived there.

She told him about the way things were on Central Avenue, before the shooting and the riots and the Interstate 4 invasion 50 years ago. She spoke of the barber shops, hair salons and pool halls that lined the neighborhood, about the dancing and the music.

Hotel, residential towers planned for ENCORE! urban renewal project

TAMPA — The city’s high-rise skyline is set to spread further northeast with a local development firm close to completing the $7.4 million purchase of two parcels earmarked for a residential tower and hotel.

Tampa Housing Authority officials expect later this month to complete the sale of two adjoining parcels that total about three acres on the east end of Cass Street to Pinnacle Group Holdings, a Tampa development firm. The development is part of ENCORE!®, an urban renewal project west of Nebraska Avenue that is replacing Central Park Village, a former public housing complex.

The Reed at ENCORE!® Tampa is completed, fully occupied

TAMPA — The Reed at ENCORE!®, a new senior building between downtown Tampa and Ybor City, is now complete and fully occupied.

The Reed is part of a larger designed community encompassing 28 acres and expected to cover 12 city blocks. Plans include a variety of housing for all ages, including low income as well as market rate rentals and sales.
