New urban farm in downtown Tampa opens up to the public

Meacham Urban Farm has recently opened up to the public in downtown Tampa’s ENCORE! district.

The farm is a partnership between Tampa Housing Authority and three first-generation farmers, funded by part of a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Choice Neighborhood Initiative grant.

Meacham Urban Farm offers options and education in downtown Tampa

Shalonda Bryon and her family of three recently found out it’s a stone throw’s away from their own home. “Literally stumbled upon it because I did not know it existed and I live downtown,” Bryon said.

It may look like an overnight creation, but it’s been three years in the making.

In downtown Tampa, a new urban farm has blossomed from the efforts of three local farmers and the Tampa Housing Authority, turning what was once two acres of concrete into an abundant supply of nutritious foods.

Meacham Urban Farm is located in a mixed-income housing development called the ENCORE! District in Tampa and hosted a grand opening Feb. 9. It officially opened to the public Feb. 13, providing the locals with healthy options such as organic produce, eggs and meat, according to the farm’s website.

Meacham Urban Farm hosts grand opening in Tampa

Fresh organic produce, meat and eggs are now available at a brand new location in Tampa’s ENCORE! district. This is an area known as a food desert, where fresh food can be hard to find.

No longer: Meacham Urban Farm held an opening Tuesday, Feb. 9, as part of a partnership between the Tampa Housing Authority and local farmers. Named after Tampa’s first African American school principal, the 2-acre organic farm is accessible to the public.
