TAMPA — Essie Mae Reed didn’t learn to read until she was 40, but the longtime public housing activist was not known to flinch in the face of injustice, bureaucracy or even unhappy neighbors.

Today, Central Park Village itself is long gone, torn down in 2007. But Reed’s memory lives on in the newest apartment building to open at ENCORE!® Tampa, an ambitious redevelopment emerging from 28 acres between downtown and Ybor City.

Tampa Neighborhoods Surrounding Downtown Prepare for Rebirth

TAMPA — … The City [of Tampa] and Tampa Housing Authority put their energies into another project also centered on a teardown of Central Park Village. In its place, ENCORE!® Tampa, a mixed-use, mixed-income village center, rose on the former public housing site, north of downtown between Nebraska Avenue and Interstate 4.

Residents now are populating ENCORE!, filling up apartments with young families and seniors. The buildings there are winning national awards for sustainability. The Ella at ENCORE! Tampa earns Gold LEED certification

TAMPA — The Ella at ENCORE!® Tampa has been awarded a prestigious LEED® Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The apartment building, one of four newly built in the planned community designed to accommodate 2,500 residents on 40 acres between downtown Tampa and Ybor City, is already at full capacity. The neighborhood developers are working to build and attract retail and other amenities to further serve residents.

ENCORE! Tampa to raise curtain on performance theater

TAMPA — The musically themed ENCORE!® Tampa is setting the stage for a professionally operated performance theater at its newest residential building, The Tempo.

The 203-unit apartment building is under construction at the corner of Scott and Governor streets, adjacent to the city’s Perry Harvey Sr. Park. Construction on the approximately $43 million project will be completed in 2015.

Architect’s firm is a visionary force in Tampa’s renaissance

TAMPA — When the champagne corks popped and the politicians reached for the giant scissors to cut the ribbon on the new Aloft hotel downtown Wednesday, there was one guy back in the shadows with every reason in the world to smile: Rob Ledford.

Ledford is the architect of the project, a principal of the firm Baker Barrios and one of the most vital people in making Aloft come to life, not to mention several other high-profile projects around downtown Tampa — including several in the city-backed ENCORE!® development area.
